Ranchi, in its modern form, is the capital city of the Indian state of Jharkhand. The city has a moderate climate and was the summer capital of Bihar until Jharkhand was separated in the year 2000.
It is popularly known as a “City of Water Falls”. Jagannath Temple and Ratu Palace are some sights which witnessed the history of Ranchi. Ranchi is rapidly growing its economy, and certain parks, special economic zones and industrial areas are being developed.

Ranchi is a center for numerous sports activities, including cricket, hockey, football, and many others. The 34th National Games were successfully held in Ranchi in February 2011. An International Cricket stadium with an indoor stadium and a practice ground has been constructed. So far, this stadium has hosted three One day International matches and one T20 International match. Apart from that, this stadium has hosted two IPL 6 matches for Kolkata Knight Riders, three champions league 2013 matches and Celebrity Cricket League matches for Bhojpuri Dabanggs. A tennis academy, which was inaugurated by Sania Mirza and Shoaib Malik, also runs beside the cricket stadium. Former Indian Cricket Team Captain M.S. Dhoni lives in Ranchi. The Ranchi franchise for Hockey India League was bought by Patel-Uniexcel Group and the team named the Ranchi Rhinos.

Culture and Heritage

The area is known for the Dokra art form while festivals such as Basant Panchami, Holi, Diwali, Chath, Jityya Bhaiya are celebrated here. Some of the popular dance forms are Chhau and Santhal, which are group dances performed by the Santhal tribe.
Chhau- The word is derived from the Sanskrit word Chhaya meaning shade, image, or mask. It is vibrant dance portraying the daily activities of the tribal folk –working in the fields, in the forests, in their homes, etc.
Karma- Karma is another popular folk dance of Ranchi and its nearby areas, performed in the month of August during the Karma festival. The name has been derived from a tree named Karma which symbolizes good luck and prosperity and hence is considered sacred.
Sohrai is a cattle festival of Jharkhand's. It is celebrated during the Amavasya of the month of Kartik. It coincides with the Diwali festival. People fast throughout the day, and bathe their cattle. In the evening, sacrifices are offered to the cattle deity.

Ranchi is one of the major industrial cities of Eastern India and located in the region called (Chota Nagpur) making it an ideal place for mineral based industries. Ranchi has presence of many well-known government and private organisations in the vicinity of city. Ranchi district is rich in natural and mineral resources. Ranchi city is surrounded by a large & green forest area, which provides many basic raw materials to a large number of industries like construction, furniture, match box, paper, rayon, railway slippers, wooden poles, etc.
SAIL-R&D, Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (Marine Diesel Engine Project), Central Coalfields, Subarnarekha Hydel Project (JSEB), Usha (Wire Rope Division), DVC, STPI-Ranchi, Heavy Engineering Corp., Palriwal Industries, Pensol India, Waxpol Industries, Jharkhand Mega Food Park etc. are the prominent industries here.
Lalpur, Doranda and Hindpiri are the business districts and financial districts in the city and the state. This place houses several shopping malls. Whole of Ranchi has several shopping malls which include: Nucleus Mall, Mall E Decor, JD Hi-Street Mall, Ranchi Central Mall, Laxmi Tower, Mall of Ranchi, City Center (Centre) Mall, Big Mall, Spring City Mall, Arakshan Shopping Mall, Shelter Mall, Ranchi Green City, Artic Mall, City Center or City Centre, City Mall and Galaxia Mall.

Transportation

Ranchi city is one of the major stations of South Eastern Railways and is now well connected with most of the cities of India via rail. Ranchi Railway Station (station code RNC) is the main railway station of Ranchi, where most of the important trains have a stoppage. Nearly 16 trains start, 16 trains end and 20 trains pass from Ranchi Railway station. Ranchi has train services to many cities of India like Patna, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Rourkela, Jaipur, Amritsar, Nagpur, Pune, Gorakhpur, Dhanbad, Raipur, Puri, Cuttack, Durg, Ajmer, Jamshedpur, Jammu, Surat, Bilaspur, New Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai, Bhubaneswar, Bangalore, Vishakhapatnam, Vijaywada, etc. Some of the direct trains which reach Ranchi are - from Kolkata (Shatabdi Expres), Chennai (Dhn Alappuzha E), Mumbai (Rnc Ltt Express), Delhi (Rnc Ndls Raj Ex), and Bangalore (Ypr-Hte Exp). Ranchi’s domestic airport also called Birsa Munda Airport (Code: IXR) connects the other part of India to the city. The airport is located in Hinoo, approximately 7 km (4.3 mi) from the centre of the city. Ranchi has direct flights from Patna, Bangalore, Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Goa, Chennai, Jammu and Kolkata. Air India, GoAir, Indigo and Jet Airways Few are some of the major airlines which offer flight services to Ranchi city.

Local Cuisine

The staple foods in Jharkhand are rice, dal, vegetables, and tubers. Some dishes include Chilka Roti, Malpua, Dhooska, Arsa roti, and Pitha. Rugra (a type of mushroom) and bamboo shoots are also used as vegetables. The leaves of the Munga tree (Moringa oleifera) and the Koinar tree (Bauhinia variegata) are used as leafy vegetables or Saag.
