Leh-Ladakh is the trip that most Indian travellers eventually do — and for good reason. It is the only high-altitude cold desert in India, the meeting of three of the world's biggest mountain ranges (Himalaya, Karakoram, Zanskar), the only place in the country where you'll cross a 5,000 m pass without trekking, and the home of some of the oldest Tibetan Buddhist monasteries still in active use. This guide is the practical version: a working 10-day itinerary, what the trip really costs, the permits you'll need, and the small details that separate a great Ladakh trip from a sick, exhausting one.

How to reach Leh-Ladakh
By air (recommended first time)
Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport (IXL) in Leh has direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Jammu, Srinagar, Chandigarh. The Delhi–Leh route takes 1 hr 25 min and is the most common.
- Best airlines: IndiGo, Air India, Vistara
- Typical fare: ₹4,500–₹12,000 (Delhi–Leh), much higher in peak July
- Important: Most flights land before 11 AM (weather window). Plan an early arrival, full day of rest for acclimatisation.
By road (for the experience)
There are two road routes, both spectacular and both genuinely demanding:
1. Manali–Leh Highway (NH-3) — 473 km. Open mid-May to October. Crosses Rohtang/Atal Tunnel, Baralacha La, Tanglang La. 2 days drive with overnight at Jispa or Sarchu.
2. Srinagar–Leh Highway (NH-1) — 422 km. Open early April to November. Crosses Zoji La, Drass, Kargil, Mulbekh, Lamayuru. 2 days drive with overnight at Kargil.
Doing both? The classic plan: Srinagar → Leh → Manali, which gives gradual acclimatisation up and a faster exit.
By train
There is no train to Leh. The nearest railhead is Jammu Tawi (700 km) or Kalka (550 km from Manali).
Permits for Ladakh (2026)
Most areas inside Ladakh — including Nubra, Pangong, Tso Moriri — require Inner Line Permits (ILP) for Indian citizens and Protected Area Permits (PAP) for foreigners.
- Apply online at lahdclehpermit.in
- Fee: ₹400 environment fee + ₹20/day Wildlife Protection Fee
- Validity: Per the dates you select
- Get multiple photocopies — checkpoints take one per visit
Most Leh-based hotels and travel desks will process this for ₹100–₹200 over the government fee.

Acclimatisation — read this section

- Day 1 in Leh: do nothing. Drink 3–4 litres of water, sleep, no alcohol.
- Day 2: short walks only — Leh market, Shanti Stupa drive.
- From Day 3: start sightseeing in the valley.
- Don't fly to Leh and immediately drive to Pangong (4,350 m). People have died doing this.
- Watch for symptoms: persistent headache, nausea, breathlessness at rest. If they worsen, descend immediately.
- Diamox (Acetazolamide) — 125 mg twice a day from 24 hours before arrival, for the first 3 days. Talk to your doctor.

Practical tips for first-time Ladakh travellers
- Don't rush the first 48 hours. Many failed Ladakh trips are because of unacclimatised drives to Pangong on day 2.
- Pre-book accommodation in peak season. July is fully sold out a month in advance.
- Carry your ID and 6 passport photos. Permits require photocopies.
- No drone without permission. Defence-sensitive areas are everywhere.
- Cash is king. SBI, J&K Bank ATMs sometimes work; private banks rarely.
- Mobile signal: postpaid SIMs only. BSNL is most reliable. Jio and Airtel postpaid have improved.
- Bottled water bans: several monasteries and villages discourage single-use plastic. Refill from filtered sources.
- Respect monastery rules. Remove shoes; no photos of the inner sanctum unless permitted; never turn your back to the deity.
- Tipping: ₹200–₹500 per day for drivers and ₹100–₹200 per day at camps is fair.
- Travel insurance — get one that covers high-altitude evacuation.
Frequently asked questions
Is Leh-Ladakh worth visiting?
Yes — it is consistently rated among the world's most spectacular landscapes. The combination of altitude, monasteries, lakes, and the Karakoram view makes it irreplaceable.

8–10 days minimum for the main loop (Leh, Sham Valley, Nubra, Pangong). 14 days to include Tso Moriri and Zanskar.
Is altitude sickness dangerous in Ladakh?
It can be. AMS is common, HACE and HAPE are life-threatening. Acclimatise properly, hydrate, and watch for symptoms. Diamox helps.
Can I drive to Ladakh in May?
Manali–Leh opens in mid-May (depending on snow). Srinagar–Leh is usually open by early April. Check before booking.
Are permits hard to get?
Not at all. Apply online or through your Leh hotel; processed in 24–48 hours during season.
